The Bucanero line exhibits
a welcome discipline in construction
and a subtlety in taste
in many of the lines that is quite remarkable,
especially with so many
with maduro wrappers of so many different origins!
It’s a line worth exploring,
not only of the nine blends
we described above, but
of the four others we didn’t cover!

Stogie Guys Reviews of Bucanero
Cigars Don Douglas Cabinet Series - BUY!
While I enjoyed Bucanero’s Treasure and Cañon Cubano,
this is definitely my favorite blend from Robert Spoden’s impressive
boutique outfit.
The 6 inch by 54 ring gauge Belicoso boasts creamy notes of oak
and spice
and a wonderful burn with a finely layered white ash.
If you let the $6-7 per stick price prevent a purchase you’ll miss
out on a great cigar.
Verdict = Buy.
Over a year ago, one of my colleagues listed three boutique cigar manufacturers in an effort to “discover new sticks and to play at least a small, direct role in supporting the art of cigar making.” Today I’d like to continue that trend because, in my opinion, these smaller-scale operations turn out some terrific smokes for a fraction of name-brand prices. Now you might be asking what qualifies a cigar producer to be “boutique.” According to a 1999 feature article in Smoke Magazine, boutique cigars are “brands with a production of less than 1.5 million sticks per year.” (That number would likely have to be upped today to adjust for increased overall cigar production.) Others say boutiques simply mean the firm’s stogies are cultivated in small batches with high attention to individual detail.
For our purposes—and because it’s a lot easier than researching production numbers—I’ll adopt a broad definition: Boutique cigar manufacturers are those with a relatively limited output, name recognition, and niche market. In other words, to borrow a metaphor from Smoke Magazine, they are the micro-breweries of the cigar industry. Either way, I don’t want to get all caught up in semantics. Instead, I’d like to share my three favorite boutiques and encourage you to explore their wonderful creations:
Bucanero Cigars. Founded during the mid-90’s cigar boom, this company uses fine tobaccos from 10 different nations to create 18 signature blends. I particularly appreciate the Don Douglas, Treasure, and Cañon lines. “[Bucanero] was, and continues today to be, built around honesty and friendship,” says President Robert Spoden. “We set out slowly to introduce unique blends.”

The Stogie Guys Reviews
of Bucanero Cigars Treasure of Costa Rica - BUY!
In January, Robert Spoden of Bucanero Cigars told us about his company’s
philosophy
of focusing its resources on making great sticks, not marketing.
The six inch by 54 ring gauge Treasure Belicoso is a good case in
point.
This Costa Rican puro boasts a smooth, leather-like flavor and excellent
construction.
Verdict = Buy.

"Blind tasting".
The Bucanero Full Sail Maduro catches
you first with its name, and then with some aggressive looks.
A toro sized
cigar with
a wrapper as dark as the depths of the deepest sea, one expects a salt
water slap in the face when you get ready to smoke.
The surface of the Full Sail is a bit rough.
Not exactly rough in a bad way, but rough in the way that weathered
lines
on an old mariners face add character. One of our reviewers even
added that the small imperfections in the
wrapper gave this cigar a more interesting appearance. Rest assured that
the Bucanero Full Sail Maduro leaves
no impression stronger than this is going to be a deep rich smoke.
A firm cigar with a roughly finished
cap, the toro cut cleanly, and reveals a nicely packed cigar. Expect
a
clean burn and draw. All reviewers loved the ash of this cigar, as
it slowly grows into a soft gray extension of the rest of the cigar.
You got to love this ash, makes
me remember cigars
from before the cigar
boom. Nothing fancy, just a
straightforward burnt tobacco gray.”
The initial aroma of the Bucanero did not leave
many
reviewers searching for adjectives,
but this is a case where silence is golden.
Flavor wise, the spice comes at you
from the first draw.
No easing you into this smoke, the Bucanero has the sails open, and is
taking you for a ride.
“The Bucanero Full Sail Maduro started with some spice and earthiness from the first draw.
The taste of both increased as the burn neared
the middle of the cigar.
The flavors were simple and balanced.
The taste remained consistent throughout
the rest of the cigar.
The cigar never became harsh or bitter.”
In the age where many cigar manufacturers seem to be trying to out dual
each other on who can make the
strongest cigar, The Full Sail is a nice respite. Often times the
desire to increase strength will leave you tasting
something for the next week. Not so here. It's refreshing that a
boutique cigar producer can take additional risks,
and not try and appeal to every category of cigar smoker. This is
the case with Bucanero, and we applaud
them for continually coming out with quality products that a cigar smoker
can rely on.
We highly recommend giving the Bucanero Full
Sail
Maduro a try, in fact you likely won't go
bad trying any ship in their marina.

"Blind tasting"
"Unbelievable!! The taste was a great
blend of chocolate, cocoa and maybe a hit of occasionally fruitiness.
A taste of coffee emerged, but caused no bitterness.
Then, with no warning, an "off-the-top-rope"
espresso smack in the face! Awesome! This cigar expressed a VSG-like flavor,
but without the associated harshness.
This baby was smooth from start to finish,
with a beautiful crescendo of strength and flavor,
accompanied by a gentle landing. I am hesitant to say this about a cigar
I just met. I don't even know your name yet.
But, I think I love you!!!!!
A+ Ok, you have my review, now reveal the
name of this cigar and no one gets hurt!"
