“The Captain” is a box-pressed beauty that debuted in 2001, featuring a Costa Rican-grown maduro wrapper. It offers a medium body and has a spicy aroma. The treat is in the taste, which has a creamy core to it and a touch of sweetness on the finish. It’s well balanced and consistent with an easy draw and a pleasure to smoke.
In my travels in Costa Rica years ago I stumbled on a small tobacco farmer in Costa Rica that was rolling cigars along side of a dirt road. I was out of my cigars and decided to stop and buy a couple of his creations. When I fired up one of his dark beauties I was taken back by the flavor of this mans wrapper. Just flat out awesome in flavor. I never had anything like it period! We went onto buying his entire small crop yearly. At first a number of magazines that cater to cigar smokers hammered us for using a Costa Rican wrapper. Many stated it’s an unconventional tobacco.
Two years later it became the highest rated cigar in Smoke Magazine history. I remember the French looking down at California wines back then just like the "experts" did with Costa Rican tobacco. Unfortunately Costa Rica of which I love the country and its people ever since I found this wonderful country in 1969 has so many micro climates and finding such a gem in tobacco is very difficult.
Today there are a number of cigar manufactures that offer a Costa Rican tobacco...none like the little farmer I found years ago.
The El Capitan is rich in flavor with hints of natural cocoa and espresso and an array of other spices. It’s truly something special in a cigar. Very Special!
It is simply outstanding with a nice Merlot or Cab. Fire one up and wait a few minutes before sampling your wine. Boom! What a synergy of flavor. By it self or with a glass of wine it's unbelievable!
